"Fasting is a statement of humility. When God sees you humbling yourself, He will exalt you."

?We all have our favorite food. For me, it’s rice. I honestly believe God must have been resting when He made rice—the grains bring such comfort the moment they touch your tongue. And what can I say about Nigerian Jollof rice? It is truly the king of Jollof!
?Because food is such a core comfort, it makes sense why it is often the ultimate test. Consider Jesus’ very first temptation in the wilderness: it was to turn stones into bread. In fact, both Adam and Jesus were tempted with food. We read later on in the scriptures that temptations generally fall into three specific categories, just like the ones faced by Jesus:
?I John 2:16 NKJV
[16] For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
?To overcome these temptations, Jesus’ response was to quote scripture:
?Deuteronomy 8:3 NKJV
[3] So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
?Isn’t it interesting that the feeding of Manna—heavenly food—was designed to humble God’s children? It was meant to show them that we do not live by physical food alone, but by His word.
?Ultimately, fasting is a posture of the heart. It is a way of saying we are humbling ourselves before God, letting go of our fleshly desires, and choosing to rely solely on Him. And we know that God holds humility in the highest regard:
?James 4:10 NKJV
[10] Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
