If we’ve learnt anything during the pandemic, it is that loss of smell and taste is not nice! But you’ll agree with me that the other more essential job of the tongue is for talking.
I was recently reminded of this verse: James 1:26 ESV
[26] If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.
Other scripture translations use the words "control his tongue." I particularly like the "bridle" word!
A bridle is a piece of horse tack that allows a rider to control and communicate with a horse. The bridle is made up of a headstall and reins that connect to the horse’s mouth. The rider uses the reins to control the direction of the horse but NOT to control the pace!
There is wisdom in not speaking too much in a conversation, as it’s always good for others to speak, and there could be the potential for us to add extras to the story when we speak much!

But most times it’s not about the quantity of the words but the QUALITY of it. I’d rather sit with someone who speaks a lot of positive and uplifting words than sit with someone who speaks very few negative words.
Bridling our tongue means we control the direction of the words coming out of our mouth. Positive direction instead of negative direction.
Your words can change situations; your words can uplift; your words can open doors; your words can close doors! Choose wisely. Choose the quality of your words over quantity. Bridle that tongue in the right direction!
